Band History

1982:
The sculptural idea, of humanistic figures with puma-like faces and paws, was
conceived in clay. The cascading mane, dominating the back view, is
a continuation of
Bird #1 from
Family Reunion.
Even though, this first creature was
just a prototype, Nannette made a
plaster "working" mold to develop the theme. Two single wax creatures
followed and then a third, called "Mother and
Child." The mother
was seated and held a small animal-child tenderly on her lap. She was the only creature
to develop
human-like arms and hands (paws). After several unsuccessful
wax images followed,
Nannette had an artistic block.
She could not find the proper direction or solutions and reluctantly, put the
creatures aside UNTIL ... almost five years later, when
watching an MTV video with her children.
1987: The
"block" lifted when Nannette saw the musicians on the TV screen acting like
animals. It suddenly became clear that
her "puma people" were meant to be a musical band. All
problems became resolved as Nannette added arms, legs, a
musical instrument, and a whimsical personae to each animal.
1987-1991: The first animal played the piano while the second beat on drums. The
seated mother became the trumpeter, while her child strummed a banjo. A
lead singer, the largest figure, unified the band.
